Headlines and Reaction

We've got a big week ahead of us in earnings on the U.S. Market Calendar.  Let's take a look at the headlines.  Here we go again...

Reuters: Earnings May Drive Stocks Higher

NEW YORK — Stocks are expected to rise next week as investors focus on the start of the third-quarter earnings reporting season, which has generated a good buzz.

The market should build on its gains this week as corporate profits may be better than expected, analysts say. With very few earnings warnings in the run-up to the reporting period, it could turn into a good quarter.

WSJ.com: Economic growth and corporate earnings are expected to boom in the third quarter. But whether all the money the government has thrown at the economy will have lasting effects into 2004 remains in question.

REACTION: Short memories.  As quickly as they wrote off the market two weeks ago after the Dollar tumbled, they've changed their minds because of three up days.  Of course, it's a test of top on the daily charts.

WSJ.com: The U.N. called an emergency meeting of the Security Council after Israeli warplanes bombed an alleged Islamic Jihad training base deep in Syria. Arafat named Qureia prime minister and appointed an emergency cabinet. Arab leaders warned that violence could spread through the region.

REACTION: Duh!  Violence has been going on in the region for the last 2,000 years!  And what do we supposed the U.N. is going to do about anything? Perhaps they can organize a cocktail party.  After all, it's officially United Nations Day on October 24.
