Well, we made it to another friday. Today is the expiration of January options. I'll be back at lunch hour to make more entries for today's newsletter.
Drove up to Whistler, site of the 2010 winter olympic games, for dinner last night. If you ever come up to this part of the world, Rimrock Cafe is a must. While it might seem crazy to drive almost two hours each way just to have dinner, it was worth it. Really worth it.
After the market close yesterday, I hopped into the car for the long and challenging drive. Made a pit stop at Cafe Artigiano on Pender Street to grab a latte and date square to keep me awake.
For a change, it was a really sunny and beautiful day. As I drove past Stanley Park, over the Lion's Gate bridge and then onto the upper levels highway, I put on a pair of the most amazing polarized Persols while "easy listening" music blasted from the speakers.
At that moment, it felt so good, I called my friend up at Whistler and said, "You know, I'm so happy right now that if everything ended on the Sea to Sky Highway on the way up to dinner, it would be just fine with me..."
That's one woman's definition of happiness, I guess. Maybe I just need to get out more...
Just a reminder that the market will be closed on Monday, January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
Of course, Mike and I do not get a day off. We'll be doing more cleanup, and hopefully, there will be a nice surprise in store when you come back on Tuesday!
This question came in the email a few days ago:
Do you have a watchlist of stocks for each sector you look at? Could you provide some info on this since I'm trying to build a watchlist for myself but have some problems with selecting good tradeable stocks.
This is a question with a two-part answer. First, about sectors. You can find the component stocks for the popular sectors in a number of exchanges:
American Stock Exchange: If you click on each individual index on this page, it will take you to another page where there is a "show index components". For example, if you click on the Amex Gold BUGS Index, you will be able to see all the component stocks of this index.
Philadelphia Stock Exchange: Home of a number of high profile stock sectors, most notably, the Semiconductor Sector and it's component issues.
CBOE Index Microsites: Information on the broad market indices.
For the major market indices, you need to visit a number of sites to obtain and/or download the components of the Dow Jones Industrial Index, the constituent list of the S&P 500 Index, and the NASDAQ 100 Index. The component stocks of all of the major indices and sectors are also available at Yahoo!
We look for stocks that trade more than a million shares per day. For swing trading, we suggest two million shares per day. The more liquidity there is, the better prices that we are likely to obtain when trading the stock or options.
Once the list is narrowed down, you may wish to use some sort of scanner tuned to pick out stocks that fit your criteria.
