Notes for the Day

  • USD, Gold: Continued hints from the Fed that rates are a-rising has supported the dollar – we can expect this range high to test and perhaps fail, although unless the economy starts to roll over or some other catalyst that kills off the expectation (at near certainty in terms of emotion) that the Fed will continue to raise rates, we should not be too surprised if the dollar heads higher yet in the weeks to come and gold correspondingly lower. Still, a big test is coming up within the next few days and we’ll want to pay close attention.
  • The oil and gas sector has quite a few charts that look like the current upswing is ready for a pause; if long in this area one wants to be ready to take at least partial profits and/or look for a catalyst (such as crude pushing > 59 and holding) which would support the names. Buy the dip has worked for a some time – one of these days it will stop working but we aren’t likely quite there yet.
  • Quite a few stocks testing prior highs or stalling out at new 52 week highs – its time to be cautious on the long side and ensure we have a profit strategy in place that meets our personalities and objectives. We can’t be sure there is more to this rally, but then as traders, we know we can always rebuy later if there is…

Long Setups

General common strategy: Unless noted otherwise, buy stop just above the “high” value, with an initial protective stop at the low value of the bar, not below the bar.

Test of Top – Continuation


RIG – oil field services (others like BJS, HAL etc have been performing stronger)


BAX – healthcare – first pause following breakout. Follow up for another 1 – 2 days if untriggered or stopped out.


WYE – pharma, carried forward from yesterday


CC – retail, consumer discretionary – also happens to be in a rising wedge therefore if filled we want to see a strong move up and hold only if price closes quite strongly.


RY:C / RY:NYSE – one of the big banks in Canada; investing in banking is a national pastime there.


N:C / N:NYSE – mining and minerals. Has been on a real tear, reported this morning and guided outlook down. Aggressive folks might look for a short term short scalp, I’m going to look at market reaction since the lowered guidance is maintenance related. Following up for 1 – 2 more days.

Short Setups

General common strategy: Unless noted otherwise, place a sell alert at or just below the low of the setup bar, and look for the first failed intraday bounce after the low has been broken. What we are looking for is price to push down, bounce a little, and fail again – this is where we want to get short.

RIG – also noted as a long above.

Retracement or Pause in Down Swing / Down Trend


C – finance – may be ready to stall given the distance travelled as of late but this is a classic bear flag so far…


FDO – retail – bear flag rising to resistance (tall down bar 3 sessions ago) first target is rising trendline below

CMX – cement, Mexico


STT – potential failed top – occasionally when price really ramps up quickly in a parabolic fashion, the “retest” never makes it quite to the prior high. Stalk short today only… other than this potential, STT is in a range and therefore trendless. First target is the bearflag base and then the range low near 48.

Test of Bottom – Continuation


FFIV – I’ve low expectations of direct continuation down but the setup is here for the stalking

Special Situations


WEN – short – narrow range bars rising to nearby resistance – target is range low below (marked in green) and perhaps the 50 peroid MA near 43.
